The Char Kuai/You Tiau/Cakoi/Chinese Cruellers in full glory! Yes, this was my comfort food for today. What is it? Well, here's a cultural lesson in Malaysian food, people ;)! They are long deep-fried dough sticks, in a pair. You can usually find them at hawker/street stalls, or in small coffee shops. I can explain the taste: somewhat doughnut-ish, but far crispier and greasier! *faints* Believe me it's super yummy.
You can eat in many ways. Dunk them by the stick in your coffee, dip them with jam or kaya (spread made of coconut milk & pal sugar), or simply sprinkle it with sugar. Or you may chop it up and mix it into a fruit salad (rojak), spice it up by eating it with chili sauce, or my all-time favourite savory snack/meal....
Chopped up, and served with a hot bowl of smooth savory wholesome-y porridge!
Ooooooh baby!
Ooooooh baby!
In fact, there is a food outlet, selling only these! Along with some other nice snacks like stuffed fried buns, soybean pudding (tau foo far), and nutritious soybean milk. Of course, bringing a traditional street food into the retail market, it is going to cost twice as much, but hey! Anything to keep tradition going, and not let such things fade, I guess! The shop is aptly named "I Love Yoo". Yes. I. do.
